Padar Island — Sunrise Viewpoint Trek
Three bays, one ridgeline
Padar Island is the first stop on the Passohara Komodo open trip — a ridgeline where three crescent bays open on either side. You climb about 20–30 minutes to the most iconic viewpoint in Komodo National Park, in the early light before the steps turn hot.
What to expect
- A 20–30 minute step climb to the ridgeline
- The three-bay panorama, each bay a different sand colour
- Sunrise photo time, ahead of the crowds
- No Komodo dragons on Padar — viewpoint only
- Best time
- Early morning, while the air is still cool
- Duration
- 45–60 minutes on the island
- Difficulty
- Moderate — many steps, comfortable shoes needed
Good to know
The first stop, on purpose: we reach Padar while the light is still low and the air is still cool. The climb to the viewpoint is not a race — about 20–30 minutes of steps to the ridgeline, where three crescent bays open on either side. The sand in each bay is a different colour. This is the Komodo photo you have already seen; here you stand inside it.
The steps can be slick when wet and scorching by midday — which is exactly why we schedule Padar first. Bring water, a hat and a camera; there are no kiosks at the top.
The steps can be slick and hot if you arrive late — that is exactly why we schedule Padar first.
